Transducers and Sensors

In medium, high and extra-high voltage, the measurement of voltage and current in the electrical power supply takes place either via instrument transformers (voltage transformers, current transformers) or by means of suitable sensors (e.g. voltage dividers). Thus, instrument transformers and sensors play an important role as a link between primary technology and secondary technology and, for this reason, are a topic that occupies both primary and secondary engineers.

From the primary technology side, it must be ensured that the instrument transformers and sensors installed in the network can be operated safely and reliably until the end of their service life.

From the secondary engineering point of view, certain characteristics of a instrument transformer/sensor (e.g. accuracy, saturation behavior, etc.) must be known.
Verification of proper wiring between instrument transformers/sensors and the measurement equipment (e.g., a protective relay) is also significant.

Another important issue in power quality measurement is the frequency-dependent transformation ratio of transformers (transmission behavior). Since it is not possible to avoid resonances in the transmission behavior of converters for design reasons, there is often a need for alternative measurement systems for broadband (resonance-free) measurement of voltage and current.
